Is Having Emergency Food a Silly or a Smart Idea?

emergency food
I compare having a back up food supply to insurance. We have auto insurance, home owners insurance, etc... why not food insurance. I look at food insurance just like I do any other insurance it's best to have it and never need it than to need it one time and not have it. With a back up emergency food supply if you don't need it you can always eat it.

You have a couple of options when it comes to having a back up food storage plan.

You can prepare your own back up food storage supply or you can purchase ready to go meals that will last 15 plus years. The upside of preparing your own food storage is you can store food you and your family know and like. The downside is typically the shelf life is short and you have to stay on top of rotating your emergency food supply.

Your second option is to purchase ready to eat meals that are designed to last 15 plus years. There are tons of companies that offer emergency food storage meals with a shelf life of 15 plus years. The only problem is most of the meals taste like well... I will be nice and say not so great.

Make sure before you purchase any back up food supply the company sends you samples of the food so you and your family can pick and choose what you like. I can't think of many things worse than being in the middle of an emergency with a food shortage and having to eat food that I do not like. That would make the situation much worse.

With lots of natural disasters taking place throughout the world and lots of uncertainty with our current economy food storage companies have been raising their prices. It's all about supply and demand. Millions of people who thought it was silly to have an emergency food supply are now thinking it's a good idea. A lot of companies are taking advantage of the situation which is a big part of me writing this article. It makes me angry to see people gouge people when they could be helping them and still make a good living.

Before you purchase an emergency backup food supply from any company make sure they are willing to do these four simple things and this will let you know what type of company you are dealing with:

#1 Send samples so you and your family can decide who likes what meals.

#2 Compare quality; make sure the products are produced in packing facilities that are FDA Certified for handling real meat and eggs. (Not all companies do this)

#3 Make sure the company you purchase your emergency food storage from lets you make small purchases. Some companies will only sell a minimum of a six month supply which can be a little pricey for most people to spend at one time especially if you are talking about a family of four or five.

#4 Make sure you can pick and choose what you order, don't do package deals unless you have tried each of the foods in the package and you and your family are happy with the quality and the taste.

One last tip make sure you do your homework on the nutritional value of the food you purchase. If you and your family have to use your emergency food storage you want to make sure you are getting proper nutrition.

There is no do overs in this situation you are stuck with what you have, choose wisely.
