What You Need To Have In Your Go-Bag

A go-bag is a group of items that you will need to have in hand in the event of a disaster or an evacuation. Pack one go-bag for each family member in a sturdy, easy-to-carry item like a backpack or a small duffel bag. Assemble an ID tag for each go-bag and store it in a secure, waterproof area where everyone in the home can quickly take it and go. 

The following items should be included in your emergency go-bag:

  1. Water, one gallon per person per day 
  2. Nonperishable foods, freeze dried foods and MREs, energy foods, granola bars
  3. Copies of your important documents in a waterproof and portable container (insurance cards, birth certificates, deeds, photo IDs, proof of address, and other critical documents)
  4. Extra set of car and house keys
  5. Credit and ATM cards, and some cash
  6. Flashlight, candles
  7. Tent
  8. Battery-operated AM/FM radio with extra batteries
  9. Prescription medication. Also include a list of the medications each member of your household takes, why they take them, and their dosages, and a copy of your health insurance. A liist of allergies to medication or food should also be included
  10. Personal hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, and deodorant
  11. A first aid kit
  12. Contact and meeting place information for everyone in your family
  13. A map of the area and a compass
  14. Special care supplies for children, seniors, or people with disabilities, pet care supplies, if you have pets (shelters may have food for humans but not for pets)
  15. Lightweight rain gear, blankets and/or space blankets
  16. Undergarments, underwear and socks
  17. Spare phone, power cord and a power-bank
